Random close packing in a granular model
We introduce a 2-dimensional lattice model of granular matter. We use a combination of proof and simulation to demonstrate an order/disorder phase transition in the model, to which we associate the granular phenomenon of random close packing.
متن کاملOn random graphs and the statistical mechanics of granular matter
– The dynamics of spins on a random graph with ferromagnetic three-spin interactions is used to model the compaction of granular matter under a series of taps. Taps are modelled as the random flipping of a small fraction of the spins followed by a quench at zero temperature. We find that the density approached during a logarithmically slow compaction the random-close-packing density corresponds...
متن کاملRandom Loose Packing in Granular Matter
We introduce and simulate a two-dimensional Edwards-style model of granular matter at vanishing pressure. The model incorporates some of the effects of gravity and friction, and exhibits a random loose packing density whose standard deviation vanishes with increasing system size, a phenomenon that should be verifiable for real granular matter.
متن کاملSpatial distribution functions of random packed granular spheres obtained by direct particle imaging.
We measure the two-point density correlations and Voronoi cell distributions of cyclically sheared granular spheres obtained with a fluorescence technique and compare them with random packing of frictionless spheres. We find that the radial distribution function g(r) is captured by the Percus-Yevick equation for initial volume fraction ϕ=0.59. However, small but systematic deviations are observ...
متن کاملRandom close packing of disks and spheres in confined geometries.
Studies of random close packing of spheres have advanced our knowledge about the structure of systems such as liquids, glasses, emulsions, granular media, and amorphous solids. In confined geometries, the structural properties of random-packed systems will change. To understand these changes, we study random close packing in finite-sized confined systems, in both two and three dimensions. Each ...
